The Niaux cave
The Niaux cave is not only one of the most famous prehistoric caves in Europe but one of the few with animal paintings which are open to the public.
Walk through 800 m of galleries of impressive size to reach the Black Room. In this naturally circular chamber of a monumental heigt the walls are covered with more than 80 animal paintings of a high quality : bisons, horses, bouquetins, and deer are all associated with numerous geometrical symbols.
Mainly to conserve these 14 thousand year old artworks and to preserve them for future generations, booking is essential (with visits arranged in English).
Opened throughout the year, closed certain days outside of school holidays.

The Mas d'Azil cave
The cave was a refuge for men during the prehistoric period throught to the Religious Wars, the Azil cave is also an exceptionnal natural site, particularly the impressive 65 m arch. Crossed by a river and a road, these gigantic cave possess mny clues to the activities of prehistoric man and the Azilien culture.
